Between the 2023 and 2026 dry seasons, our soil team analysed 1,860 samples from 412 fields in Nyaung-U, Kyaukpadaung, Myingyan, and Pakokku. Each field was sampled at five points in a diagonal, and each point was analysed separately before the results were averaged. That last decision turned out to matter more than anything else in the study.
The average is a comfortable lie
A field with an average pH of 6.4 sounds fine for pulses. But an average of 6.4 can be made of four points at 6.8 and one point at 4.8 — a low patch beside a field drain, or where a compost heap stood for years, or where the topsoil was scraped during land levelling.
In our sample, 61 per cent of fields had a within-field range of more than 1.2 pH units. In 18 per cent of fields, the range exceeded 2.0 units. The low patches were not random. They clustered along field edges, near water outlets, and on the higher, eroded ground.
Why the low patch matters out of proportion to its size
Pulses — chickpea, black gram, green gram, pigeon pea — depend on rhizobia for nitrogen. Rhizobia are sensitive to acidity. Below pH 5.5, nodulation falls sharply in most of the varieties grown here, and below 5.0 it can stop almost entirely. A plant in that patch stays pale and small no matter how much phosphorus is applied, because the phosphorus is also less available at low pH.
In 2025 we paired yield cuts with sample points in 38 chickpea fields. Plants in patches below pH 5.5 yielded an average of 34 per cent less than plants in the same field above pH 6.0. The farmer had applied the same seed, the same phosphorus, and the same irrigation to both.
What the data suggests for liming
Liming is expensive and slow, and it is easy to waste. Three findings shape our advice:
- Sample by zone, not by field. Five points analysed separately cost more than one mixed sample, but they tell you where to spend. In most fields, liming the low third at the full rate is better than liming the whole field at a third of the rate.
- Apply before the pulse, not before the rice. The pH change takes months. Applying lime in the dry season, six to eight weeks before the pulse crop, gives the rhizobia time to respond. Applied immediately before sowing, the effect is mostly lost.
- Do not lime above 6.5. Several fields in our sample are now at 7.2 because lime was applied every year without a new test. At that pH, zinc and boron start to become less available, and the cure becomes a new deficiency.
The cheap version of the same decision
Not every household can afford separate analyses. There is a lower-cost approach that captures most of the value: sample the low patches and the good patches separately, mix each group, and send two samples instead of five. Ask the laboratory to report organic matter and phosphorus alongside pH. Those three numbers together explain most of the variation we see in pulse response.
For farmers who cannot reach a laboratory at all, a field test with a portable meter is better than nothing, provided the electrode is calibrated the same day and the soil is mixed with distilled water rather than the irrigation source. We run calibration sessions at the Nyaung-U office on the first Thursday of each month, open to any farmer or co-operative technician.
What we still do not know
Our sample is biased toward fields that were already working with us, and toward fields where a pulse was planned. We do not yet have enough data on sesame, which appears to tolerate acidity better than chickpea but responds differently to liming. That is the next study, beginning in the 2027 dry season with 60 fields in Magway.
The full dataset, including the sampling protocol and the laboratory methods, is available on request for researchers and co-operative agronomists. We would rather be corrected than quoted.
